Hair Restoration Compounds

America First Pharmacies prepares customized hair restoration medications when your prescriber determines that a commercially available product is not right for you. That might mean combining two active ingredients into one topical, leaving out an ingredient you do not tolerate, or preparing a strength that no manufacturer makes.

Formulas prescribers may request include topical finasteride with minoxidil, topical dutasteride, minoxidil paired with tretinoin or ketoconazole, and low-dose oral minoxidil. Every formula on this page is prescription only.

We are an independent pharmacy in Irving, and a pharmacist you can actually talk to reviews every formula we prepare. If you are wondering whether a compounded option belongs in your plan, ask your prescriber, or call us and we will help you prepare for that conversation.

  • Topical finasteride with minoxidil
  • Topical dutasteride
  • Minoxidil with tretinoin
  • Minoxidil with ketoconazole
  • Low-dose oral minoxidil capsules
  • Propylene glycol-free topical bases
  • Custom strengths and combinations, per your prescription

Why a Compounded Formula

Commercial hair loss products come in fixed strengths and standard bases. That works for many people. It does not work for everyone. Some patients react to ingredients like propylene glycol. Some prescribers want two active ingredients in a single topical instead of several separate products. Others want a strength or combination that is not commercially manufactured. In those cases, your prescriber can write a prescription for a compounded formula, and America First Pharmacies prepares it for you, one patient at a time.

How It Works

Start by talking with your prescriber about whether a compounded formula fits your treatment plan. If it does, your prescriber sends the prescription to America First Pharmacies by fax or e-prescribe. Our pharmacists prepare it in our Irving compounding lab and walk you through how to use it, including how to apply a topical and what to watch for. A prescription is required for every formula on this page.

Safety and What to Discuss With Your Prescriber

There is no FDA-approved topical finasteride product. Topical finasteride is available only as a compounded medication, which means it has not been reviewed by the FDA for safety, effectiveness, or quality. In April 2025, the FDA issued an alert about compounded topical finasteride after patients reported side effects including sexual dysfunction, depression, and suicidal thoughts. Some patients reported that symptoms continued after they stopped using the product. Topical does not mean risk-free. Finasteride applied to the skin can still be absorbed into the body. Before starting any therapy on this page, talk openly with your prescriber about your health history, including your mental health, and report any new or worsening symptoms right away. Our pharmacists are glad to go over the FDA alert with you in plain English.
