Hormone Therapy for Women

Hormone levels shift as women move through perimenopause and menopause. For some, that shift brings hot flashes, night sweats, sleep changes, vaginal dryness, or changes in mood. These symptoms are common, and they are worth a real conversation with your prescriber. Hormone therapy is one option a prescriber may consider.

Compounded hormone therapy is often called bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, or BHRT. At America First Pharmacies, we prepare customized hormone medications when your prescriber determines a commercially available product is not right for you. That might mean a strength that is not manufactured, a sensitivity to a dye or filler, or a dosage form you cannot use. Every preparation is made from a prescription written specifically for you.

Our pharmacists in Irving work directly with you and your prescriber. We can answer questions about your preparation, coordinate refills, and adjust the compound when your prescriber changes your prescription. If you are not sure where to start, book a consultation and we will help you prepare questions for your next appointment.

  • Estradiol
  • Biest, a blend of estradiol and estriol
  • Progesterone
  • DHEA
  • Low-dose testosterone for women
  • Compounded thyroid preparations, when prescribed
  • Combination preparations at the strength your prescriber specifies

How It Works

Your prescriber evaluates your symptoms and health history. If they decide a compounded hormone preparation may be an option for you, they write a prescription with a specific ingredient, strength, and form. We compound it here at America First Pharmacies and review it with you at pickup or delivery. As your needs change, your prescriber can adjust the prescription and we adjust the compound to match.

Why a Prescriber Might Choose a Compounded Option

Manufactured hormone products come in set strengths and forms, and when one of those fits, it is usually the first choice. A prescriber may consider a compounded preparation when a commercially available product is not right for you, for example a strength that is not manufactured, an allergy to an inactive ingredient, or a form that is easier for you to use. That decision always belongs to you and your prescriber.

Safety and What to Discuss With Your Prescriber

Hormone therapy is prescription therapy with potential benefits and risks, and both differ from person to person. Compounded hormone preparations are not safer or more natural than FDA-approved hormone products. One note on Biest: it contains estriol, and no FDA-approved drug product containing estriol exists. Before starting any hormone therapy, talk with your prescriber about your health history, breast and heart health, what monitoring you will need, and how long treatment may last. Our pharmacists are glad to be part of that conversation.
